"John Beasley's MONK'estra Reinvents Thelonious Monk for the 21st Century” — LA Weekly "From start to finish, with an engaging Crescent City-flavored excursion en route, there’s no mistaking this session for what it is: a labor of love for Beasley and a reminder of the wonderfully malleable nature of Monk’s music when handled with care and ingenuity.” — JazzTimes Apple: />Amazon: />Mack Avenue: /> “Jazz legend Thelonious Monk was one of a kind – witty, offbeat, dissonant, totally unpredictable. Musicians and singers have been attempting to re-create the singular Monk magic for years to little avail. Enter the fearless and talented pianist/arranger John Beasley, who not only takes on Monk’s challenging but rewarding music by doubling up on the quirk, wit, and unpredictability, but orchestrates a 15-piece big band of Los Angeles’s finest jazz musicians to pull it off. MONK’estra, Vol. 1 is, as the man himself might say, a gas.”

Saw them live last night. Peter Erskine on drums, slightly different instrumentation (added bari sax, 3 trombones). Burnin'. Lots of Monk tunes you probably never heard. Brilliant arranging and playing. Bass player was on fire. All solos tearing it up. Check them out if/when you can.
Dope AF!! So laid back behind that mothafing beat
